“Emancipation Day Celebration”

January 2, 2010 - 2 pm - 4 pm

Join the staff of The Newsome House Museum in a celebration of  Emancipation Day.  Learn the historic significance of Emancipation Day and why it is important to acknowledge today.  Special guest performance by Mr. Calvin Earl - "Gifts From My Ancestors" will begin at 2:30pm.   "Gifts From My Ancestors" preserves the African-American Spiritual in the oral tradition. The spiritual songs of the Old South represent the true history of the American people.   They are portraits in courage, reflecting in blood, sweat and tears all that was intended in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. They document the joyful moments of our success.   Through it all revealing our interconnectedness as Americans and taking the time to honor the slaves for their many contributions to our nation. A concert/lecture for families. 60 minutes.  Refreshments will be served.  Free to the public.
